TMZCrunch: Tech news, but way better

After 12 years in tech, most of the news coverage out there just starts to run together. I often wonder what would happen if an outfit like TMZ were to cover technology. I mashed up from the websites of TechCrunch and TMZ to give us and idea of what their coverage might look like:

  • Cops Investigating Street Fight. Twitter Is Down. Again.
  • Live on YouTube Tonight: A Big Wiener
  • Gary Coleman’s Ex Has Determined That There Are 129,864,880 Books In The World (For Now)
  • Heidi Klum’s Body Is Their Internal Warm Fuzzy Jar
  • Enrique Gets Naked, Comes to the iPhone
  • Eric Schmidt – Tiger Wood’s Mistress?

Come on TMZ, TechCrunch. Let’s get this merger going.

The Video Website, a parody of the ‘Social Network’ movie

You’ve all seen the previews for the new movie Social Network about the founding of Facebook. Now see the story behind the founding of YouTube. Well, not the real story.

Nneka Live at the Newport Folk Festival

NPR is hosting a live recording of Nneka performing live at the Newport Folk Festival. If you haven’t heard her yet, she is a Nigerian singer/songwriter. She has opened for Lauryn Hill, Lenny Kravitz, Gnarls Barkeley and tons of others. She recently dropped an album called Concrete Jungle, which is definitely one of my favorites of the year.

Amazing disco club recordings

So, this has nothing to do with marketing, pr, etc. But if you’re like me and you work from home doing creative stuff, this music will definitely help.

It’s a bunch of mixtapes and club recordings from the disco era. It’s not the played out, super cheese that you think of when you hear disco. It’s the fun, funky stuff that will get you over the 3PM hump.

Check it out at Million Dollar Disco. Play on, playa.

Rounded Edges

Perhaps the best direction every given to a web designer from a client:

Client negotiating tactics outside of the agency

I forgot about this video. Watching it in 2010, I don’t know if it’s still funny. It kind of makes me want to cringe, hearing these things more frequently these days.

Words that make me want to punch you in the face :)

If you’re like me, there are certain words that make you cringe. I’ve spent most of my career in tech PR, so there are some buzzwords that I just can’t stand.

I never wanted to be the kind of person that had irrational attitudes about words like revolutionize, utilize and leverage, but there you go. Sure, these words mean something and in their proper context they’re great words. They’ve just been overused and misused to the point that they’ve become the great platitudes of technology.

To identify these words that I think people need to stop using (or at least use with care), I’ve added a new page called Stop Saying. It’s hooked into a Twitter account (@stopsaying) and will display whatever I tweet there. Continue reading
